Story
On the modern sign, the road had a number. In the old newspaper, it had a name. In the deed book, it was only "the road toward the river."
The family nearly missed the record because they trusted the newest label most. Then they placed the names side by side and saw the route begin to move through time.
The road had changed names, but the research rule was simple: search every name the sources used, then mark which one belongs to which date.
Reflection questions
- Why do route names change across records?
- How can a name-change table help prevent a false dead end?
