Story
The recorder was on, but the interviewer learned that silence was part of the source too.
When the elder paused, nobody rushed to fill the space. They asked whether the next memory should stay private, be summarized, or be saved for family only.
The transcript later had three labels: public, private, and research lead. That was how the story stayed generous without becoming careless.
Reflection questions
- Why does consent matter during and after an interview?
- How can a transcript separate public memory from private detail?
